Webcast: climate change and the fossil fuel debate
AsianInvestor recently hosted a live webcast discussion entitled Climate change and the fossil fuel debate: is it just hot air or a real threat to asset owners?
Collectively oil, gas and coal companies are worth $5 trillion in terms of stock market value. This discussion ranged from the inevitability of divestment and the drivers for it to what the investment alternatives are.
We considered whether there should be a global carbon price, whether the regulation on carbon emissions will impact the valuations of fossil fuel firms, and whether investors believe the companies they invest in have the right to pollute.
Leading the discussion were Jessica Robinson, CEO of the Association for Sustainable and Responsible Investment in Asia; Paula DiPerna, special adviser to CDP, formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project, which requests information on environmental performance from the world’s largest firms; and Mamadou-Abou Sarr, global head of environmental, corporate and social governance at Northern Trust Asset Management in Abu Dhabi.
