SSB continues regional equity hires

Salomon Smith Barney has announced the appointment of Nels R. Friets as a managing director and head of equities in Singapore. The appointment follows from SSB's mid-October appointment of two new faces to its Indian equities business in Hong Kong and New York.

Friets joins SSB from Credit Lyonnais Securities Asia (Singapore), where he was managing director in charge of its Singapore/Malaysia operations. In his new position Friets will be responsible for developing and managing SSB’s Singaporean equity business. He will report to William Choy, managing director and head of Asia Pacific Equities, based in Hong Kong.

Commenting on the appointment, Choy said: “This is another important hire in the management team for Singapore as we continue to build our domestic and international franchise for Singaporean securities. It further demonstrates Salomon’s positive outlook for and long-term commitment to this particular market.”

Friets is a Yale graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics. A Singapore permanent resident since 1989, he has lived and worked in Asia for 16 years.
