A gathering of leading insurance executives convened in Hong Kong to discuss topics such as the implications of upcoming regulations such as IFRS 17, the growing role of ESG in investments and the evolving role of the insurance CIO on March 10.
The Insurance Investment Briefing, held at the Island Shangri-La, featured chief investment officers and sustainability specialists from some of the biggest and well-known insurers in the industry.
Shiuan Ting van Vuuren, chief investment officer at Sun Life International HuBS, noted that there are still several challenges around International Financial Reporting Standard 17 framework, which make it tough for insurers to make real-time investment decisions based on regulations that remain fairly ambiguous.
Kerry Adams-Strump, director of group ESG at Prudential, talked about another topic on top of mind for investors - the social impact of pursuing net zero goals.
She explained how the the insurer uses its voice to help shape evolving regulations and protocols around sustainability so that they can be developed in a way that takes into account the needs of the emerging markets in Africa and Asia.
Elton Shum, head of Asia regional fixed income portfolio management and trading at Manulife, meanwhile, highlighted that understanding ESG is an increasingly important skill insurance CIOs need to have when managing money.
