AIA's Tan Soo Thiam departs, new executive takes over

Tan Soo Thiam, AIA Group's regional director of investment management - fixed income, left the firm at the end of July, AsianInvestor understands.

Hong Kong-based Tan used to head the pan-Asian fixed income group, including teams in 18 regional markets, according to publicly available information.

Tan has worked for more than two decades with the insurer in different leadership roles.

Anna Cheung, group head of credit at AIA, has taken over Tan’s role, AsianInvestor understands.

It is unclear if she will retain her previous role along with the new title.

Her LinkedIn profile shows she joined AIA in January 2020 and has previously worked with Bank of America.

In addition, William Leung was appointed director of group credit effective August 1. Leung will report to Cheung.

Leung joined AIA's group investment team in 2007. He has worked closely with credit analysts to grow the firm’s credit portfolio and represented the group credit side while ensuring the delivery of major projects such as the credit risk system and IFRS 9.

AIA declined to comment on Tan’s departure and the new appointments.

Headquartered in Hong Kong, AIA is the largest publicly listed pan-Asian life insurance group. It has a presence in 18 markets across the Asia Pacific via wholly-owned branches and subsidiaries.

It had total assets of $286 billion at the end of December 2023. The group is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

The insurer recently announced it is enhancing its investment capabilities through a partnership with BlackRock and BNY, implementing an integrated data management system across front and back offices.
